Doctor Who: Season 14, Episode 5 – Dot and Bubble

We’ve all seen them. Perhaps you even are one. Those people walking along the street, headphones on, heads down, immersed in their smartphones, utterly oblivious to what’s happening around them – in both a literal and a wider sense. Where I live, in central Barcelona, I often find myself having to dodge them as I walk along, as otherwise they would just walk right into me before they noticed I was there.

Well, that was a weird one. As if on a mission to demonstrate just how flexible a show Doctor Who can be, this week Russell T Davies veered away from cutesy babies, musical numbers and earnest anti-war polemic to deliver a genuinely creepy, off-kilter ghost story that deserves a place in the show’s long history of nightmare fuel for its child viewers.

Old school Who fans who were (perhaps understandably) concerned that last week’s brightly coloured deluge of space babies, farting space stations and musical numbers signalled a show more in the style of CBeebies will have been reassured by the massive tonal shift in the show this week, courtesy of returning alumnus Steven Moffat.

So, it’s back, the show I started to write this blog about – and it’s confusing. Not so much the plot – though we’ll get to that later – but as to what exactly the numbering should be. It’s the 14^th full season since the show’s return in 2005. I always thought it was justifiable to refer to the 2005 season as “Series 1”, given the 16 year gap since the end of the original run’s “Season 26”.

Well, that’s over. A plotline that’s been six years in the making, stretching across no fewer than four TV series, with details eked out crumb by crumb, has finally come to an end. Was it a satisfying one?

After last week’s (admittedly well-written) two-hander saw Rick and Michonne solving all their relationship difficulties in the most effective day of couples counselling the world has ever seen, this week saw them going on honeymoon.

Well, contrary to my expectations after last week’s Big Cliffhanger, Rick and Michonne didn’t have parachutes after all. Luckily for them, they were over water when Michonne dragged them both out of the helicopter. Even more luckily, there was a handy luxury condominium nearby, which still had power, supplies, and a nice clean bed for our heroes to, er, reconnect.

Well, all the pieces are finally in place, and now the true plot of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live can finally get going. Yes, it’s been fun and all catching up with how Rick and Michonne got back together, and we’ve had the setup of the Civic Republic and its totalitarian military. But what we really want to know is: how are Rick and Michonne going to win?

As expected, after last week’s focus on Rick, this second instalment of The Ones Who Live was a Michonne-centric episode, catching us up on how the other half of TWD’s power couple found herself confronting her long lost beloved in the aftermath of shooting down his CRM helicopter.

I used to love The Walking Dead.

Sure, it had a shaky start. A fairly assured first season of an economic six episodes was followed by a draggy second of thirteen, in which the characters stood around arguing on a farm and occasionally a zombie showed up. But by the third and fourth seasons, with the group ensconced in the prison and at war with David Morrissey’s charismatic Governor, the show had truly found its feet and was compulsive viewing.
